Tambopata Research Center (TRC) emerged many years ago as an investigation hub for scientists and biologists. Then, fortunately for us, it opened its doors to the public and is one of our favorite places. It is the only lodge inside the Tambopata National Reserve, making it one of the most remote lodges in South America.
It offers an unmatched opportunity to learn from experts about the wildlife in the heart of the Amazon rainforest.
To get to TRC, it is necessary to travel by air, land, and river. A flight from the cities of Lima or Cusco takes you to Puerto Maldonado in southeastern Peru. By land, we head to the port where you will board motorized canoes upriver to the lodge.
A two-hour trip allows for the first sightings of macaws, herons, caimans, capybaras, and with luck, jaguars, among other wildlife.
In the evening, together with an expert guide and scientist, explore the lodge’s trails in search of mammals and amphibians.
The silence of the early morning is interrupted by the screeching of macaws. Visit the Chuncho clay lick and witness how these big birds and 20 other species of parrots swoop down to feed on the nutrients found in this clay cliff. Admire the colorful spectacle of nature that inspired a National Geographic cover story.
In the afternoon, hike a trail covered with immense trees, streams, and ponds. Among figs, ceibas, and shihuahuancos trees, you will go in search of squirrel monkeys, brown capuchinos, and spider monkeys.
Back at TRC, the scientists who live permanently in this lodge will give you a lecture about the biology of the macaws. Discover fascinating details about these beautiful, large, and colorful birds.
Hike together with your rainforest guides and find the smallest bird hiding in the canopy, the most elusive monkey, and the most spectacular plant life.
The sun descends early in the jungle. Under the thick canopy of rainforest trees, darkness falls quickly when light can no longer slip through the green foliage. Now, as the afternoon turns to dusk, you will see one of the most spectacular sunsets in the world. The sky will be tinged with oranges, reds, and pinks, reflecting in the calm waters of the Tambopata River.
Time to say goodbye to the rainforest. We will arrive at the river port by motorboat and then drive to the airport in Puerto Maldonado.
