You will get to know the best of Cusco and the Peruvian Amazon through a route especially design for families who would like to add to their trip a subtle hint of adventure, or for those traveling with small children. At Cusco, we visit ruins and the most beautiful natural scenery of the Andes, we learn how to make chocolate and also fish at the Sacred Valley, ride horses through local communities and visit the extraordinary ruins of Machu Picchu. At the Amazon, we explore Tambopata, one of the largest natural reserves of Peru, having the opportunity to get close to many animals of the region and learn more about the habitat that surrounds them.  A fascinating and comprehensive experience around the most privileged scenarios from the mountains to the rainforest of Peru.

 

Day 1: Lima-Cusco

Cusco is one hour flight away from Lima city. At Cusco airport you meet your tour guide and be transferred to your hotel. The rest of the morning be free to rest and let your body acclimatize to the 3000 meters over sea level on which lies Cusco city. On the afternoon we  walk along the ancient and little narrow cobbled streets that connect Cusco to the traditional neighborhood of San Blas, where the most renowned craftsmen put their creations on display.  Hotel: Cusco

 

Day 2: Cusco, nearby ruins and easy trek

The second day we visit the two most important ruins at Cusco city, first Sacsayhuaman, Inca fortress and ceremonial centre built with impressive stone blocks; and Q’enqo, ancient ceremonial and ritual centre. From this point we begin a short and easy walk following an old, but well preserved Inca Trail. Gradually we descend from the rural to the urban, passing by the Temple of the Moon to finally reach the main square of Cusco. In the afternoon, we visit the Chocolate Museum to learn more about Peruvian cacao, declared as one of the best of the world. As a family, we participate in a workshop to learn how to make a delicious sweet. Step by step, we learn the details of the process, which begins with cocoa beans and finished tasting our own chocolate!  Hotel: Cusco / Meals included: B

 

Day 3: Cusco, Sacred Valley & Sea Kayak

In the morning we head towards Huaypo, a beautiful lagoon perched on the heights of the Andes. Its waters provide communities and cultivated fields around the area; and reflect the hills and mountains surrounding it. For about an hour and a half, we paddle around the lagoon in sea kayaks, a ride that allows us to appreciate the nature around in all its dimensions. On the banks of Huaypo, our chef will be waiting with a delicious outdoor picnic!   In the afternoon, we learn more about agriculture during the empire visiting the Inca ruins of Moray, ancient experimental and agricultural center; and afterwards the salt mines of Pichingoto, impressive conglomerate of over three thousand terraces where salt is stored from the Inca time till today.  Hotel: Sacred Valley / Meals included: B+L

 

Day 4: Sacred Valley & Fishing

Today we share a fun family activity, learning how to fish at the Pacharcocha lagoon located at Chumpe community. We receive a speed class to learn different knots and the different types of fishing that can be perform, such as fly fishing or “spinning” which is the conventional style. Next, with the entire equipment ready, we explore the lake looking for the best fishing experience. We will be able to find Iris Rainbow Trout, a common species in the Peruvian Andes and if we get lucky we could even find one up to 50 cm long! We be back to have lunch at the shore of the lagoon before returning to our hotel in the Sacred Valley.  Hotel: Sacred Valley / Meals included: B

 

Day 5: Sacred Valley – Horse Ride

Today we visit the private farm Huayocari, where we learn more about Peruvian history after the arrival of the Spanish. From here, we start our horseback ride, passing through the cultivated field along Huicho, Huayllabamba and Urquillo communities, been able to appreciate more closely how the local people live. Our ride culminates at the farmhouse, where we enjoy a delicious lunch prepared mainly with local typical products harvested in the “kitchen gardens” of the farm.  Hotel: Sacred Valley / Meals included: B+L

 

Day 6: Sacred Valley & Aguas Calientes

In the morning we drive to the town of Ollantaytambo, located opposite to the majestic ruins of the same name. Ollantaytambo is known as the only Inca town still alive, as the local people still lives at the old stone houses of their ancestors and their water channels keep running, just as they did at the time of the Incas. We walk through these ancient streets and visit a family that keeps their customs, to watch closely and learn more about how ancient Peruvian lived on the Andes. After lunch we head to the station to board the train that will take us to the village of Machu Picchu, where we spend the night and rest to be ready for the next day exploration of the Inca Citidel.  Hotel: Machu Picchu Town / Meals Included: B

 

Day 7: Machu Picchu & Cusco

Today we visit very carefully Machu Picchu citadel. Upon our arrival we have a complete guided tour of the site and then free time to explore by ourselves. Optionally, you can climb to the top of Huayna Picchu, from where we see a unique way of the citadel, from a different angle, with a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountain peaks and the great canyon of Urubamba. In the afternoon, we take a bus to the town of Aguas Calientes to board the train that will take us back to Cusco.

 

Day 8: Cusco & Puerto Maldonado

A private shuttle pick you up from your hotel in Cusco to take you to the airport, where you and your family take a one hour flight with destiny the Peruvian jungle, Puerto Maldonado city. Once you arrive, a Rainforest Expeditions guide will be waiting to transfer you to the native community of Infierno. Then in a motor boat and for the time of two hours, we drive you to the lodge called “Refugio Amazonas” located inside the Tambopata National Reserve, one of the largest of Peru. During the trip you will see bird species typical of the river banks, as Capped Heron, Jabiru Stork, Roadside Hawk, Swallows and several species of kingfishers. After you get installed at the lodge and have enjoyed a delicious dinner, we have the opportunity to navigate the Tambopata River at night in search of crocodiles resting on the river banks.  Hotel: Refugio Amazonas & Meals included: B+L+S

 

Day 9: Amazonas

Today we have the option to participate in many activities, from the first to the last ray of sunlight. Remember that participating in all or only some of the activities we organize for you is entirely optional. At dawn, we have the opportunity to climb a tower of 25 m high from where we can see the tops of huge trees and the birds that inhabit them or those flying at that altitude, such as toucans, parrots and macaws. After breakfast, we visit the farm of the charismatic Don Manuel, a member of the Commonwealth of the Condemned. Here we can see and learn about the different crops and medicinal plants of the region. We return to the lodge walking by a route full of chestnut trees. After lunch and well rested, we head to Lake Convicted in search of shanshos (hoatzin) and caimans. Afterward we return to the lodge for dinner. Hotel: Refugio Amazonas / Meals included: B+L+S

 

Day 10: Puerto Maldonado – Lima

Early in the morning, after a delicious breakfast, we board a motor boat to the port of Puerto Maldonado. Here it will be waiting our transportation to take us to the airport just in time to catch our flight back to Lima. Our Adventure arrives to the end.  Hotel: Refugio Amazonas? / Meals included: B
