APURIMAC RIVER (4D/3N)

The Apurimac (a Quechua word meaning "The Speech of God", or "the talking God") River is the furthest and most distant source of one of world's longest and largest rivers: the great Amazon. The river canyon which the Apurimac carves through the Andes as it flows northward to join up with other rivers in eventually forming the Amazon, is considered to be, along with the Cotahuasi and Colca, among the deepest in the world.

In its final thrust through the Andes into the jungle, the waters of the Apurimac flow through a gorge 3,000 meters (about 10,000 feet) deep, forming Class III, IV and V rapids. This inner canyon possesses imposing sheer rock walls and geological formations, as well as beautiful beaches to camp on. All these features have made the Apurimac into one of the favorite and choicest destinations of the devotees of River Rafting.

Itinerary

Day 01  Cusco – Huallpachaca and Boating

Departure from the city of Cusco, heading southwest to the bridge of Huallpachaca (elevation: 2000 meters – 6600 feet- above sea level) which is our put-in point to the Apurimac river. In the afternoon, we paddle for about one and a half hours down Class III and IV rapids and reach our first campsite.

Day 02 "El Chute" to "Cola de Dragon" (Dragon's Tail)
Kayak Peru

Today we raft down the deepest section of the canyon and one of the most beautiful parts of the trip: a stretch of Class III rapids between great walls of granite, strikingly carved and sculpted by the erosion from the flow of the water current. Today's activities also include 2 portages and some very enjoyable Class IV rapids before arriving at our second camp.

DAY 3 "Cola de Dragon" to "Dolor de muelas"
Kayak Peru

In the morning we shall run several Class III and IV rapids bearing picturesque names such as "Trinche" (Meat Fork) and "Mesa" ("Table"). These serve as the "hors d'oeuvres" and "entree" before the main dish: the celebrated Class V rapid known by the very appropriate name of "Dolor de Muelas" ("Toothache"). Shortly beyond it lies our next camp.
